Chapter 5 and 19 Reading
Please read though chapters 5 and 19. You can hold off on anything after Page 830 (section 19.7) as we will come back to this and learn it with Equilibrium.
Major areas of focus include:
Enthalpy, Entropy, Laws of Themodynamics, Calorimetry, Endo vs. Exothermic Reactions, Stoichiometry with Energy Values.
You can play with the Calorimetry Virtual Lab to the right under simulations.

Inquiry Lab #1
Goal: Determine the
Mass Percent of Copper Metal in a Unknown Sample of Brass
Key concepts that must be addressed:
How do you remove the copper from the brass?
How do you determine the “amount” of copper that was removed
from the brass?
Consider the data collected and how that will be helpful –
Remember – Mass % of Copper in Brass = (Mass of Copper/Mass
of Brass)X100%
Requirement – You must incorporate the Spectrophotometer in
your procedure
Come to class with thoughtful ideas. DO NOT LOOK UP THE GOAL ONLINE. The idea is for you to think, not find the
answers on the internet. If you want to
look up information that is needed, like “how to remove copper from brass”
ok.

First Lab Day - This Thursday August 29th
We will be doing BOTH "gravimetric" labs linked under the Lab Work page on Day 6. Please read them thoroughly and be ready to perform them both.
