General Chemistry - Chemical Reactions Packet

Here is a HUGE packet that I have collated for your balancing equation practice needs.  Enjoy.  An answer key is soon to follow.  Note:  there is NO extra credit as some of the problems suggest.  There is never extra credit; there is only normal credit.

APChem - Just seeing you made me sicker

If you did not finish the IMF virtual lab, do so and print out the report.  Please review the remainder of the IMF chapter including vapor pressure, viscosity, phase diagrams and the different types of solids (thanks Christian).  We will be moving into the Solutions- chapter 13 - next week, so if you would like to get a start on that....

GenChem Take Home Quiz

This take home quiz is due Monday when we return.  You may work on it in class today. You may use your notes and you may also use the applets on the blog to aid in your completing the quiz.  You may not work with anyone else.

GenChem - WED December 12

Please review the remaining Prezi's on Chemical vs. Physical changes and Phase changes.  You can then look at the  three applets on balancing equations and two on phase changes.  We will pick up with this information when I return....hopefully soon.  For some of you who have been absent, please use this time to catch up with notes and lab work.

AP CHEMISTRY - WED DEC 12

For the 12/12/12 holiday that is occurring today I ask you celebrate by working on and completing the packet of AP problems that I passed out earlier in the week.  I suggest you work together in a group and then check your answers by searching for the scoring guidelines online.  I hope to be in tomorrow.

GenChem - Model Building Continued

Now that we have built molecules using physical models, we will turn to the virtual world.  Use a combination of the first four applets to the right to recreate the molecules on the computer. Make sure you are clear on geometry, angles and polarity.  This will end our model building section and a quiz is will be given shortly (early next week).

Work While I am Absent

GenChem - please explore the Java Applet to the right-hand side of this blog labeled 'Polar Molecules.'  An interactive program will open (you must have Java installed on your computer) that will allow you to explore different molecules, both real and hypothetical to see if/when they are polar and why.  Please look into each of the real molecules demonstrated by this program.

AP Chem- Continue to work on the AP problems assigned.  We will wrap-up the chapter on Gases when I return.  I would utilize the other study sources on this blog as well, pa

General Chemistry - Periodic Trend Assignment

By the end of our discussion on periodic trends, you will need to turn in the linked Periodic Trend Quiz for a grade.  You can start it now.  Work on it in groups.  Work on it while we cover the material.

General Chemistry - 11/15 - 11/20 Material

Hello all.  You are currently studying for or finishing up your 1st trimester finals....but the science must go on.  For the brief time we are together before Thanksgiving Break, we will be looking at trends within the periodic table.  Please review the Prezi linked in the General Chemistry Study Resources Page.

Here are some other resources that will prepare you for class:

Summary of the general pattern for Periodic Trends

Periodic Trend PowerPoint with good pictures/graphs (movie links do not work)

More movies/animations than you have time to watch.  Pick the one(s) you think will help the most.

We will then be moving on to Similarities/Differences in Ionic vs Covalent bonding.  I would also read the book, watch the Prezis, and/or find some similar resources linked above to be ready for class.

GENCHEM - Lewis Structure Practice

Here is a multiple choice Lewis Structure practice website.  It does ask for some Lewis Structures that are outside of the scope of GenChem, so skip those.  Lewis MC

GENERAL CHEMISTRY EXAM NEXT WEEK

Reminder that GenChem has an exam next week.  Chem4 will be splitting the exam between Monday and Tuesday and Chem1 will be taking it at once during their double Tuesday.  To add to the plethora of mole practice problems, here is a copy of the packet given to you in class on electron/photon behavior, orbitals and electron configurations.

Good luck

AP Chem Lab - Molecular Geometry

We will be utilizing the eChem Applet and Structure Drawing Applet during our virtual lab on building models. Please open the links in separate windows or tabs so you may go back and forth to each site during the lab. The word document that contains the lab write up can be found here.

You will not be able to complete this lab as we have not covered hybridization in covalent bonding.  We will add to it as we cover more information.

GenChem QUIZ - TOMORROW 10/12/2012

Our quiz tomorrow will cover the following topics...

Moles, Mole Conversion, Metric System

Here is a packet containing a metric ton of practice problems WITH ANSWERS - and some typos!.  I will be selecting from this packet EXACT questions that I will use for your quiz.  Note: this packet does not follow two of our rules.  Remember, when determining molar mass (molecular weight) round to two numbers past the decimal when using the average atomic masses on the periodic table.  Also, the answers on this sheet are not rounded to the correct number of significant figures.  Think about that as you compare your answers to the answer keys.

AP CHEMISTRY - LAB TOMORROW

You will be designing and executing a lab tomorrow to determine the UNKNOWN concentration of a specific colored electrolyte solution.  I have provided you a few resources to get your mind going.  You will not know the electrolyte until tomorrow.  You will have a stock solution of KNOWN concentration already created.  Your goal will be to determine the unknown concentration that I give you.  The following links include a video, a student written lab report and a 'cook book' lab from another AP class.  The last link is a prezi used to describe Beer's Law.  Use them wisely to develop your method.

GEN CHEM EXAM REMINDER

Next week - Sept. 27th - we will be having our first Exam (if I was more tech-savvy, some scary music would be playing now).  Stay tuned to this blog for some extra review problems!

GenChem - Unit Conversion Practice

The last topic we will discuss that will be on our first exam (SEPT 27th)  is unit conversion. Here is a worksheet for some extra practice - Unit Conversion Practice

Remember. If you need to look at some conversion factors, there is a reference under General Chemistry Important Documents.

GENERAL CHEMISTRY - Practice for Quiz

Isotopes and Ion worksheet - This worksheet uses some different vocabulary.  They refer to 'isotope notation' where I would use the term Nuclear Symbol.  They also combine Nuclear Symbols with Ions which usually are not written together.  Give it a shot.

Naming Compounds/Molecules and Writing Formulas Worksheets: This link contains MANY worksheets.  I would definitely do the second to the last one listed.  On this worksheet skip #16.

AP CHEM LAB - ANION IDENTIFICATION WRITE UP

For THURSDAY - Turn in a sheet of paper that contains the following:

Unknown Letter and which Anion you believe it to be (i.e. Unknow J is the K+ ion)

Net Ionic equation that describes the reaction you witnessed in the test tube (look at the reagents in the procedure for help)

A paragraph that discusses the error that could have occurred in this lab that may lead you to a false identification.  In this paragraph suggest methods that could be taken next time to eliminate these errors.

AP CHEMISTRY - FPD Lab TOMORROW

Read the website from the following LINK.

We will base our lab tomorrow off of it. However, we will be using paraffin wax as our solute. We will still be using Benzoic Acid as the solute. The major difference is we will be looking for the Kf value of Paraffin wax, which if you do a quick search....is difficult to find.

See you tomorrow
