Check earlier posts for the lab report format.

LAB REPORT FORMAT

Here is the format for your lab report

Name and Date - don't take up 35 lines with your name, date, class, height, astrological sign, etc.

Title - Should read as scientific - Example that sucks = Chem lab for heating stuff up; Example that sucks = I got the fever for an exothermic reaction; Example that is great = Investigating the Effect of Surface Area on Evaporation Rate.

Introduction - Should be about a page.  Gives background to the reader about the scientific concepts that are utilized in the lab.  Could highlight specific pieces of lab equipment that are unique to the lab.  Must be cited.

Materials List - List the chemicals, lab equipment, etc.

Methods - Like a procedure, but list in paragraph form, 3rd person past tense.  NOT step-wise.
Example = 3.5 grams of NaCl was then added to a beaker.  To this beaker, 35.0 mL of distilled was added and the mixture stirred until all of the NaCl dissolved.

Data - MUST BE DATA.  MUST BE IN A TABLE or TABLES.  Averages are not data.  Differences are not data.

Calculations - Show how to do ONE example of each calculation.  TYPE IT YOU GOON.

Results - Should be in a table as well.  Highlights answers to all calculations.

Discussion - Explains the relevance of the data/results.  Aims to explain how you interpreted the data/results.  Highlights the sources of error in your experiment and suggests to the reader how to avoid them in the future.

Conclusion- brief summary of the major findings.
